    VOLUNTEER FOR ALBURQUERQUE READS!

Serving New Mexico is central to UNM's mission. Everything that we do at the University - education and research as well as service activities --- advances the interest of New Mexico. One way we can demonstrate our commitment to Public Service is through the Albuquerque Reads program. Albuquerque Reads is designed to provide additional support and guidance to kindergartners who are just learning to read.

President David Harris is asking for volunteers to support Albuquerque Reads.

Volunteers will be required to attend a three-hour training session and then commit to at least two hours every other week working with students in an APS school. Applications can be downloaded from the Albuquerque Reads Website or picked up at the Office for Government Affairs which is located in Scholes Hall. Volunteers can share an assignment to reduce the time commitment. If you have any questions, please contact Cathy Britain. Managers and supervisors are encouraged to work with staff who are interested in volunteering by being flexible with work schedules.

Studies show that if a child cannot read at grade level by third grade, he or she will probably drop out of high school. Early interventions, such as the Albuquerque Reads program, can be very successful in preventing reading difficulties in young children. You have the opportunity to make a difference in the life of a child. We hope that UNM faculty and staff will volunteer for this important community initiative.

Thank you to everyone who has expressed an interest in volunteering for the Albuquerque Reads program. This is a wonderful program that allows each of us to spend a relatively small amount of time today to help ensure New Mexico's future.

A number of UNM faculty and staff have already expressed an interest in participating in this year's program. For more information on becoming a volunteer for this important and worthwhile program, please contact Cathy Britain at 277-7520 or by email at cbritain@
